Descriptions of Polyps and Epidermal Papillomas in Three Bivalve Mollusk Species

چکیده
Polypoid growths of the foot, mantle, and pericardium have been found repeatedly in bivalve molluscs. These growths (reviewed by Pauley, 1969; Sparks, 1972) generally are composed of essentially normal tissues and have been variously interpreted. Forty-seven (15.7 percent) of 299 freshwater mussels, Anodonta californiensis, with foot lesions were collected by Gilbert B. Pauley from the Columbia River on the Hanford Energy Research and Development Administration Reservation in 1965 or 1966 and have been previously described (Pauley, 1967a, b, 1969). A representative specimen from this series was contributed to the Registry of Tumors in Lower Animals (RTLA 142). The growth was 3-4 mm in diameter and extended slightly more than 2 mm beyond the surface of the foot. The gross surface, as seen with a hand lens, had a slightly sculptured texture, similar to that of the normal areas of the foot. The growth was very slightly constricted at the point of attachment. size, frequency, and the thickness of the vessel walls. The peripheral onefourth of the growth was heavily occupied by normal elongate glands, filled with basophilic granular product, extending up into the surface papillae (Fig. 3). The papilliferous surface was composed of a normal simple ciliated columnar epithelium (Fig. 4). The cause of these lesions is unknown, but the basically normal arrangement of normal cell types rules out neoplasia. The two tissues that had to have proliferated to provide the extra bulk of covering were the fibrous connective tissue and the surface epithelium. The fanning out of muscle from the point of attachment suggests that muscle was pulled into the area as if an injury had caused the surface to Harshbarger

Background and purpose: Lead (Pb) is an element that due to high solubility in aqueous solutions can cause poisoning in consumer. Therefore, removal or reduction of Pb (II) from industries wastewater and contaminated drinking water is inevitable. In recent years, particular attention to the variety of natural structures and cost-effective materials to remove pollutants from aqueous solutions ha...
متن کاملThe Middle Miocene freshwater mollusk fauna of Lake Gacko (SE Bosnia and Herzegovina): taxonomic revision and paleoenvironmental analysis
During the Early to Middle Miocene the Dinaride mountain chain harbored a series of intramontane lakes, collectively termed the Dinaride Lake System (DLS; Figs 1A–B; Krstić et al. 2003; Harzhauser & Mandic 2008). These tectonically isolated lakes experienced an outstanding endemic evolution of freshwater mollusks. Harzhauser & Mandic (2008, 2010) described the DLS fauna as entity and counted 11...
متن کاملStudy of Linear Alkyl Benzene (LABs) as molecular marker of sewage pollution in Bivalves Mollusk “AnodontaCygnea” in Anzali lagoon
Tracking and determining the amount and types of urban sewage that is being releasing to the environment is important in planning for wastewater treatment systems and water quality control. In this research, in four stations of Anzali Lagoon, (by means of a gas chromatograph device with mass detector spectrometer) wastewater pollution has been measured and evaluated with molecular indicator Lin...
متن کاملA new genus and species of Thyasiridae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) from deep-water, Beaufort Sea, northern Alaska
Bivalve mollusk shells were collected in 2350 m depth in the Beaufort Sea, Arctic Ocean off northern Alaska. Initial identification suggested the specimens were a member of the bivalve family Thyasiridae, but no known eastern Pacific or Arctic living or fossil thyasirid resembled these deep-water specimens. Comparisons were made with the type of the genera Maorithyas Fleming, 1950, Spinaxinus O...
متن کاملOccurrence of potentially pathogenic Vibrio in oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and waters from bivalve mollusk cultivations in the South Bay of Santa Catarina.
INTRODUCTION This research aimed to identify and quantify potentially pathogenic Vibrio from different cultivations of bivalve shellfish in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and water regions in the South Bay, as well as correlate the incidence of these microorganisms with the physicochemical parameters of marine waters. METHODS Between October 2008 and March 2009, 60 oyster and seawater s...
